Professor James S Harris

James S. Harris, Jr. is the James and Ellenor Chesebrough Professor of Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics and Materials Science at Stanford University. He received B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1964, 1965 and 1969, respectively. He served as the Director of the Solid State Electronics Laboratory from 1984-1998.  Dr. Harris joined the Rockwell International Science Center in Thousand Oaks, CA in 1969, where he was one of the key contributors in developing their preeminent position in GaAs high-speed device and IC technology.  He was the Director of the Optoelectronics Research Department. Dr. Harris joined the Solid State Electronics Laboratory, Stanford University, in 1982. His current research interests are in the physics and application of new artificially structured materials and nanofabrication techniques for new electronic and photonic devices, integrated photonic circuits, biomedical lab on a chip and spintronics.  He has over 850 publications, 700 conference presentations, 18 issued US patents and supervised the research of over 85 Ph.D. students in these areas.  Prof. Harris received the 2000 IEEE Morris N. Liebmann Award, the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, an Alexander von Humboldt Senior Research Award, the International Symposium on Compound Semiconductor Welker Medal. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the American Physical Society and Optical Society of America.
