SPRING 2004 SEMINAR SERIES

Janusz Bryzek, Ph.D.
Managing Partner
BN Ventures

Dr. Bryzek has been in the MEMS industry since its early days. He got involved in the development of MEMS pressure sensors in Poland in early 1970, working on technology transfer from Honeywell. In 1979 he joined Foxboro ICT, the first Silicon Valley MEMS sensor spinout from Fairchild Semiconductor. Between 1982 and 2003 Bryzek cofounded six Silicon Valley MEMS companies, all introducing products based on the cutting edge technology: Sensym, ICSensors, NovaSensor, Intelligent MicroSensor Technology, Transparent Networks and BN Ventures. One of his successful developments was the world’s first disposable blood pressure sensor in 1981, currently shipping 20 million units/year. He also worked on the development of the worldwide MEMS market awareness program launched from NovaSensor in partnership with RGA in 1986; this resulted in MEMS coverage by a majority of trade publications, and mainstream media.
He formed BN Ventures in mid 2003 focused on three strategic areas: Funding of selected emerging technologies, Searching for promising startup companies, and performing due diligence for selected Silicon Valley VC firms
Dr. Bryzek has published over 200 papers, contributed to book chapters, chaired many international conferences and co-authored 30 patents. He was also actively involved in the MEMS standardization effort, including Disposable Blood Pressure Transducers released by AAMI in 1984 and Smart transducer Interface IEEE-1451 released as several corollary standards in the 1990s. In 1994 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Sensors Magazine for the achievements in MEMS field. Dr. Bryzek serves on the Advisory Boards of investment bank Via Inc and ChipScale Review Magazine. He is also a member of National Research Council Committee for the Review of Physical Science Proposals to the State of Ohio’s Wright Center of Innovation Award Program.
Dr. Bryzek has an MSEE and Ph.D. from Warsaw Technical University. He completed the executive management program at Stanford University in 1987.
