So, what is needed for future wireless devices to become a key component in an integrated networking world?

From a technology standpoint there are three key pieces:

TCP/IP for Wireless provides:

A seamless connection to the wired internet. The gateway server, if any, will act as a simple proxy server to the Internet. With TCP/IP, legacy application protocols (HTTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP4 etc) can be leveraged.

In addition, there is a proven end-to-end security technology based on SSL.

On the application side, Browser + Java provides:

An open software platform for applications, while Java, a robust programming language, is well-suited for aftermarket applications.

To make these future products and services a reality, convergence around Internet standards is key, and I‰fm referring not just to the markup language but also the transport layer.

We are glad to see this WAP and i-mode convergence on Internet standards that is likely to happen in the near future because that has been our conviction since we published the Compact HTML standard in early 1998. From the start, we have addressed the who
