Topic: Asia and the Globalization of Technology Development:  Intellectual Property Challenges and Solutions

Moderated by Dr. Richard Dasher, Director, US-ATMC

Our discussion focuses on how companies have found ways to solve or at least mitigate the intellectual property challenges of doing global technology development.  We define the topic broadly to include issues such employment contracts, as well as patent protection and coping with multiple regulatory as well as legal systems.

Mr. Zhu is a registered patent attorney whose practice includes the patenting process, participation in litigation, and expert advice on patent portfolio management and IP strategy in the US and worldwide, especially China.

Ms. Sommers has extensive experience with corporate structuring, governance and operations issues in China, including (among other things) distribution, manufacturing and IP licensing arrangements, FCPA ("Foreign Corrupt Practices Act") and antibribery compliance, customs and other government investigations.  Ms. Sommers will participate by telephone from Shanghai, where she currently resides.

Mr. Epstein brings more than 20 years of international investment banking and venture management experience, including P&L responsibility both for major business units and startups.  For the last four years, he has focused his efforts on M&A activities in various high technology industries, with an increasing concentration on US/China and US/China/Japan interactions.
