The US and Japan together account for more than half of the global medical device market. It is a sector that is seeing a breath-taking pace of innovative development and an explosion of technology deal-making between US and Japanese companies.

Join us for a program on the latest trends in innovation, laws & regulations, and implications for Japanese and US companies in the medtech sector. The seminar will include talks by Hiromi Maeda, from Kaneka Pharma America, on the latest trends in the U.S. and Japan market, including in the areas of IoT and wearable devices, and Christopher Bright from Morgan Lewis who will discuss the latest litigations involving intellectual property and patent infringements. The talk will be moderated by Morgan Lewis Partner and JSNC Board Member Nancy Yamaguchi.

Speakers:

Hiromi Maeda is a Senior Director of the Kaneka US Innovation Center based in the Bay Area. He is responsible for new business development. He has more than 20 years of business development experience in this space, including strategic alliances with startup companies, M&A and corporate strategy. Kaneka is a global chemical company with diversified business headquartered in Japan.Its medical device business is built around products such as cardio/neurovascular devices including stents, embolization coils for intracranial aneurism, extracorporeal blood purification systems for selective removal of LDL (cholesterol) and devices for regenerative medicine and cell therapy.

Christopher D. Bright has 20 years of experience litigating patent cases, including in US federal district courts and before the International Trade Commission, and providing counseling for global patent licensing negotiations and patent due diligence for mergers and acquisitions. He has experience across a variety of sectors and industries, with a particular focus on the life sciences and technology sectors. For example, he has litigated and counseled on a broad array of patents in the area of medical devices, including bioprosthetic heart valves, image-guided surgical navigation, needleless medical connectors, and ultrasound medical imaging.

Nancy Yamaguchi (Moderator) is a Partner at Morgan Lewis. She advises technology companies across the world on cross-border mergers and acquisitions, strategic and venture capital investments, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and technology transactions. Her clients include companies in the semiconductor, automotive, banking, IT, and software industries, among others. She also advises clients on operations of technology businesses and technology assets around the world. Nancy also has a focus on settlement of disputes, including litigation, and she has successfully settled complex disputes involving technology and intellectual property rights, executives departures, key employees, founders, and equity compensation issues. She counsels clients on best practices on handling legal matters with a view to circumventing litigation or other legal disputes.
