Using Zhengrong Shi of SunTech, and Dr. Yang Zhao of MEMSIC as examples, Dr. Xu will share true entrepreneurial success stories that have occurred in the Wuxi New District. He will interpret in depth the policy and practice of how Wuxi attracts global talents and innovative leaders, and promotes research cooperation. In his talk, he will focus on the new energy and Internet-of-Things industry, and the relationship and effort between government and enterprise to foster technology innovation and to create an “Oriental Silicon Valley”.

Wuxi is at the geographic center of the Yangtze Delta region, arguably the most economically advanced area of China. With a GDP of $88.6 billion and 1.5 hours away from Shanghai, Wuxi is often called “Little Shanghai”.

The Wuxi New District ( Chinese language; English language) is a nationally accredited high-tech industrial zone covering an area of 220 km2. Since its foundation in 1992, WND has evolved to be one of the major industrial parks in China. Especially encouraged industries include electronics, information technology, electromechanical engineering, bioengineering, pharmaceuticals, new materials and fine chemical engineering. WND has been selected as “One of the Industrial Parks with the Best Environment Technology in Asian and Pacific region” by Corporate Location of UK for many years. Also, WND was among the first industrial parks in China to be certified with the ISO14001 Environment Protection System. Over 1500 enterprises have been registered in WND, from start-ups in over 20 incubators to facilities of Fortune 500 corporations. The Wuxi New District pays special attention to incubate innovative enterprises in
emerging areas. SunTech and MEMSIC are model enterprises that have grown from this area.

Dr. Xu started his career at Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After almost ten years of academic research activities, he entered the public service domain in Wuxi, China in early 2001. Dr. Xu is now the President of the Wuxi New District, a high-tech hub of Wuxi.
