BioMed Entrepreneurship in Taiwan: A Stanford Connection

Fellows in the Stanford-Taiwan BioMedical Program
Dr. Carson Chen / Dr. Charles Hou / Dr. Tom Tang

Dr. Carson Chen, Dr. Charles Hou, and Dr. Tom Tang discuss collaboration between Taiwan and the U.S. in biomedical entrepreneurship.  The panelists are all currently Fellows in the Stanford-Taiwan Biomedical Fellowship (STB) Program.  Funded by the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL) in Taiwan, the STB Program brings a select group of scientists to Stanford’s Center for Cardiovascular Technology for a year studying advanced technology innovation under the direction of Prof. Peter J. Fitzgerald, M.D., Ph.D.  The goal of the program is to train the next generation of medical technology leaders and create an innovative Med Tech platform in Taiwan.  In this panel discussion, Drs. Chen, Hou, and Tang will describe their current projects, discuss how the STB Program has influenced their thinking in regard to research commercialization, and share their perspectives into the current state and general direction of entrepreneurship in Taiwan, with focus on biomedical fields.

Dr. Carlson Chen received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University, where he concentrated on electro-optics and medical electronics.  He developed advanced high-speed 3D microscopy technology as a Visiting Scientist at MIT in 2004, and he continued research into microscopy innovation and gained solid bio lab experience as a postdoctoral fellow at CalTech (2007 – 09).

Dr. Charles Hou received the Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Taiwan’s National Defense Medical Center and subsequently was a Post Doctoral Fellow in Biomedical Science (IBMS) at Academic Sinica from 2000-2002.  Until recently, he was a Researcher in biomedical devices at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan, a nonprofit R&D organization that has played a vital role in transforming Taiwan into a high-tech economy.

Dr. Tom Tang received the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from National Cheng Kung University and the Ph.D. from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium.  He has more than 10 years of experience in surgical robot R&D and is dedicated to the promotion and implementation of robot-assisted surgery.  He is also currently Editorial Advisor to Medical Robotics Magazine and Medical Robot Advisor for the WEGO group, one of the largest medical device manufacturers and distributors in China.

This is the eighth session in the US-ATMC series “Entrepreneurship in Asian High-Tech Industries,” which continues through Tuesday, June 5.
