Midokura & the Changing Environment for Entrepreneurs in Asia

Midokura, a global startup launched out of Japan in January 2010, focuses on network virtualization and Software-Defined Networking (SDN). They successfully raised $17.3M in Series A funding in April 2013, and their flagship product, MidoNet, is a network virtualization platform which integrates with cloud platforms such as OpenStack by providing a software layer directly within existing physical network hardware.   In May 2013, they were selected by AlwaysOn as one of the OnDemand Top 100 award winners which “signifies leadership amongst peers and game-changing approaches and technologies that are likely to disrupt existing marketings and entrenched players.”

In this week’s fireside chat, Mr. Dan Mihai Dumitriu, Founder and CEO of Midokura, and guest host, Mr. Allen Miner, Chairman and CEO of SunBridge Group, they will share their insights on markets and industries developing in SDN and related technologies with a focus of the discussion on Japan and other Asian markets, as well as the U.S..

Prior to Midokura, Mr. Dan Mihai Dumitriu was a technical lead at Amazon.com where he was responsible for building key components for their famous SOA (Service Oriented Architecture). Dan also had roles at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Sony, and Reliable Network Solutions. Dan received his Bachelor and Masters in Computer Science from Cornell University.

Mr. Allen Miner is Founder and CEO of SunBridge Group, one of Japan’s most successful and respected IT startup accelerators.  He and his firm have been instrumental in the creation and success of salesforce.com Japan, Concur Japan, Macromill, ITMedia, and G-Mode among others.  He was a founding director of the Japan Venture Capital Association and the creator of Japan Venture Research, Inc./Entrepedia.  Prior to SunBridge, Mr. Miner established Oracle Japan in 1986 and helped lead it through its successful Japanese IPO in 1999.  Mr. Miner is also an advisor to the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and a sponsor of the US-ATMC lecture series at Stanford

Immediately following the session, we’ll have a short-networking reception from 5:30 – 6:15PM.  This is the seventh session in the US-Asia Technology Management Center’s ten week seminar series on “Entrepreneurship in Asian High-Tech Industries.”

Presented by the US-Asia Technology Management Center in Stanford’s School of Engineering, with support from the Miner Foundation and major series support from ISI Dentsu of America.
