Korean Ecosystem as a Growth Vehicle for Silicon Valley Startups

In a culture where risk is avoided, failure is unacceptable and stability is revered, South Korea’s Chaebols are enabling a new generation of entrepreneurs in the region.  The number of startups nearly doubled from 15,000 in 2008 to 28,000 in 2012.

In our next session on “Entrepreneurship in Asian High-Tech Industries,” Dr. Jin Lee, President of LS Corporation – Silicon Valley Office, and Mr. Brian Koo, Founder and General Partner at Formation 8 Partners, will share their extensive experiences and perspectives into the current patterns of startup company growth and success in South Korea and also how they anticipate the Korea-Silicon Valley relationship to evolve.  Updates will also be given on the Pangyo Techno Valley industrial complex which is focused on IT, BioTech, Cultural Technology and Fusion Technology developments.  Join us on Tuesday, May 6th as we learn about the challenges in creating an ecosystem that works in Korea but also delivers the benefits of Silicon Valley.

As the President of LS Corporation – Silicon Valley, Dr. Lee oversees the Corporate Venture Unit is to search for open innovation R&D and investment opportunities for new technologies, start-up companies, and strategic alliances with  companies in varying sizes across the Energy, Smart Grid, EV, Healthcare/Bio, IT, Mobile, and Semiconductor market.  Prior to joining LS Corporation, Dr. Lee was the General Manager and CTO of GE Healthcare.  Dr. Lee received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Mr. Brian Koo began his entrepreneurial career with a start-up venture that involved a wireless technology and social networking service.
