Gengo: Crowdsourcing Startup from Japan

Matthew Romaine, Co-Founder & CTO, Gengo

Founded in 2008, Gengo is a web-based startup out of Tokyo that is using the human network to crowdsource language translation services in order to render content across different languages and global networks with the click of a button.  The Gengo network comprises of a community of more than 10,000 qualified translators from 114 countries working across 34 languages and 56 language pairs.  In comparison to machine translation, the web-based human translation platform represents a significant leap in quality and faster delivery time than traditional service providers.

In our May 20th session, Mr. Matthew Romaine, Co-Founder and CTO of Gengo, will share his experiences on establishing a startup in Tokyo, growing a company, gaining market traction, attracting international talent and raising financing in a country with minimal venture funding available.  Matthew will also provide some insights into the impact of Abenomics on stimulating entrepreneurial activity in Japan.

Prior to starting Gengo, Mr. Romaine was the Co-Founder of Majides, a web agency business, and had also worked for Sony Corporation in various capacities culminating in a role to become part of a core team that led the Corporate Technology Division of the company. Mr. Romaine received his B.A. in Computer Science and Music Theory from Brown University and his Masters in Music, Science & Technology from Stanford University.

This is the 7th session in the US-Asia Technology Management Center’s series of public talks on “Entrepreneurship in Asian High-Tech Industries.”  Presented by the US-Asia Technology Management Center in Stanford’s School of Engineering, with series support from SunBridge Partners and Ideaspace Foundation.
