2014 Asia Entrepreneurship Update

“Patterns of Entrepreneurship Across Asia”

Professor Richard Dasher

Director of the US-Asia Technology Management Center | Executive Director of the Center for Integrated Systems
Consulting Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University

This overview presentation describes the evolving environment for entrepreneurial innovation in Asia, with a focus on the past year.

In the past couple of years, we saw the beginning of a structural slowdown in the Chinese economy, along with political change in Japan and Korea, international tensions over territorial disputes, and economic uncertainty in other world markets.  Population aging represents another major factor that may open up new business opportunities but inhibit the availability of risk capital.  Conversely, the infrastructure of cloud computing is opening up major areas of opportunity for start-up companies, e.g. new mobile applications and big data analytics.  Especially in such new business areas, greater labor force mobility and increasing access to global customers further promote opportunities for entrepreneurs in key Asia markets.

After discussing how such trends can be seen in recent data on entrepreneurial activity participation rates and venture capital flow, we will also introduce how such themes will be addressed by future sessions of this ten-week series.

Immediately following the session, we’ll have a short-networking reception from 5:30 – 6:15PM.  This is the first session in the US-Asia Technology Management Center’s eight week seminar series on “Entrepreneurship in Asian High-Tech Industries.”

Presented by the US-Asia Technology Management Center in Stanford’s School of Engineering, with series support from SunBridge Partners and Ideaspace Foundation.
