SE Asia Entrepreneurship Update: Trends and Dynamics in ASEAN the Economic Downturn
As China’s economic slowdown co-occurs with sluggish demand for imports in traditional end-user markets (the U.S., EU, and Japan), Asian supply chains are increasingly being directed toward infrastructure development and rapidly growing consumer demand across SE Asia. How are these developments affecting the ecosystems for entrepreneurship across ASEAN?
Dr. Edward Rubesch brings both practical experience and academic expertise to a discussion of current trends in entrepreneurship in SE Asia. He has founded four companies in Thailand which he still heads as President. He is in the process of launching the Innovation Driven Entrepreneurship Center at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and he has developed a number of entrepreneurship programs for Thailand’s Ministry of Science and Technology. Prior to that, he launched two entrepreneurship programs in Thailand, at Thammasat University and at Mahidol University. His goal is to increase the number of innovation-based startups in Thailand.
Ed was originally educated as a mechanical engineer, receiving Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a Master of Management degree from the Sasin Graduate School of Business, a program in Thailand, offered jointly by the Kellogg School of Northwestern University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Chulalongkorn University. He completed his Ph.D at Thammasat University, with a study of border entrepreneurs in the Greater Mekong Subregion. He is active in academic research in the areas of entrepreneurship, innovation, and distribution in developing countries.
