An Open Source Strategy to Spread Electric Vehicle Technology: SIM-Drive

Dr. Hiroshi Shimizu, CEO of SIM-Drive Corporation & Professor at Keio University, School of Media & Governance

Dr. Hiroshi Shimizu, CEO of SIM-Drive Corporation and Professor at the Keio University School of Media and Governance, describes a new consortium developing advanced electric vehicle (EV) technologies in Japan.

SIM-Drive, founded in 2009 to commercialize an in-wheel electric motor system for EVs, is now opening up further technology development to consortium members, which includes firms from all across the automotive supply chain.  Dr. Shimizu describes SIM-Drive technology and its applications, and will discuss related topics, such as international technology standards development for EVs.

An expert in environmental issues and technology solutions such as EVs, Dr. Shimizu has developed 14 concept cars over a 30-year period.  After receiving his Ph.D. in Engineering from Tohoku University in 1975, Dr. Shimizu became a researcher at Japan’s National Institute for Environmental Studies, where he served as Director of the Regional Environmental Research Group from 1987 for ten years.  Joining the Keio University faculty from 1997, he became a technology leader in Japan’s Eliica Project, which conducted research into the marketing of electric vehicles. Dr. Shimizu has also recently been involved with the development of electric bus technology in cooperation with the Kanagawa Prefectural Government.

Immediately following the session, we’ll have a short-networking reception from 5:30 – 6:15PM.

This is the third session in a nine week seminar series on “Green Technologies in Transportation: Recent Developments from Asia.”
