The Greening of Transportation: Will Asia Lead the Way?
Thursday, Oct 4, 2012
04:15 pm - 05:30 pm
Speaker: Dr. Richard Dasher, Director of the Stanford University US-Asia Technology Management Center
Green technologies in transportation play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which in turn is an essential task in order to slow down climate change. About 29 percent of all GHG emissions in the U.S. come from transportation. Moreover, inefficiencies in transportation (e.g. massive traffic jams) have a negative impact on economic productivity as well as lowering the quality of life. Rapid economic growth has put Asia at the forefront of this problem. In 2009, China surpassed the United States to become the world’s largest auto producer and market, with 170 million vehicles on the road in that year and as many as 220 million new vehicles projected to the roads in China by 2020. In this overview seminar, Dr. Dasher will provide an updated view of new technologies and approaches coming from Asia that aim to improve the efficiency and environmental sustainability of vehicle design, fuels, and overall system architecture, and that promote more efficient ways of using transportation in areas from logistics to leisure travel. This session also provides a framework to contextualize the subsequent sessions of this nine-week series of presentations by distinguished guest speakers, who will bring the newest information about green transportation in Asia.
