BTC: Bitcoin, a New Value Chain in China

Thursday, Dec 5, 2013

04:15 pm - 05:30 pm

Bobby Lee, Co-Founder & CEO, BTC China

Introduced in 2009, Bitcoin is an open source peer-to-peer electronic money and payment network using cryptography to secure transactions.  Over 12 million Bitcoins are currently in circulation, and on Friday, November 29th, 2013, Bitcoin reached a new high of $1,242 before retreating to trade in the $1,180 range.

According to independent pricing site Bitcoin Average, China now accounts for 62% of global market volumes.  Founded in June 2011, BTC China is China’s first bitcoin exchange and directly connected to the Chinese banking system.  The surge in demand recently led them to overtake Japan-based Mt. Gox and Europe-based Bitstamp as the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange by volume.  Bitcoin is now accepted by Chinese online retailers, a Shanghai real estate developer, and traders in Tiananmen Square.  Join us as we learn more about how this unregulated and decentralized virtual currency will impact commerce and existing payment systems in China.

Bobby Lee is the CEO and Co-Founder of BTC China.  He started his career in Silicon Valley, as a software engineer at Yahoo!, pioneering the earliest online communities on the Internet. He then moved to Shanghai, China, where he has been for the past 7 years. Mr. Lee was also the Director of Software Engineering at EMC in China, innovating in Cloud Computing and Cloud Storage. After that, he became the CTO of SMG BesTV, the leading IPTV company in China, and also the world’s largest, by subscriber base. Most recently, he was Vice President of Technology for Walmart’s new China E-Commerce business, based in Shanghai. Bobby was a Mayfield Fellow at Stanford University and graduated with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science.
