Open Innovation in Korea: Insights & Perspectives from SK Planet

Mr. Kihyun Jung, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Product Officer, SK Planet

In this week’s session, Mr. Kihyun Jung, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer of SK Planet, will provide an overview to open innovation in Korea and share some insights into SK Planet’s internal efforts and external activities to promoting open innovation within the organization. Topics to be covered include a discussion on how industry change is co-occurring with new trends in open innovation and how new businesses including social media analytics and real-time bidding are impacting online advertising and related industries.

SK Planet, established in October 2011 as a wholly owned subsidiary of SK Telecom, is building global platform businesses in Asia and other strategic markets including the U.S.. As the lynchpin of SK telecom’s future growth, the company was spun off with industry-leading platform businesses including Korea’s biggest mobile app store, mobile navigation, online music service and SNS. Through its merger with SK Marketing & Company earlier this year, SK Planet has become an integrated service platform that encompasses both online and offline marketing channels.

Bringing a breadth of experience in the US and Asia-Pacific region to SK Planet, Mr. Kihyun Jung was previously a senior executive for a global technology company, been a co-founder of a startup and was a management consultant to BCG and Accenture. In his current role, Mr. Jung oversees SK Planet’s product and corporate business development strategies as well as its global market expansion strategies. Mr. Jung has a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University and an MBA from University of California, Berkeley – Walter A. Haas School of Business.

Immediately following the session, we’ll have a short-networking reception from 5:30 – 6:15PM.  This is the fourth session in the US-Asia Technology Management Center’s nine week seminar series on “New Value Chains and the Rise of Open Innovation in Asia.

Presented by the US-Asia Technology Management Center in Stanford’s School of Engineering, with general series support from SunBridge Partners and the Miner Foundation.
