India’s Information and Technology Growth—A Personal Story

BK ModiIn a fireside chat format, Dr. B. K. Modi, Chairman of the Singapore-based India business conglomerate Spice Group, discusses the growing use of information technology in the India domestic economy for governance, delivery of services, and healthcare.  Until recently, major India IT firms have primarily targeted global markets. Please join us as Dr. Modi shares his deep insights into how to deploy and integrate technology and information innovation in a major developing economy.

Dr. B. K. Modi is the Chairman of the Singapore-based India business conglomerate Spice Group. Dr. Modi’s career has been closely linked to international partnerships.  His father had founded the Modi Group of companies, and Dr. Modi began his career in Modi Steel, one of the group’s prime business units. Then, as head of Modi Rubber, he sealed India’s first international Joint Venture partnership in the automobile tire industry with Continental of Germany and set up the first world-class tire manufacturing facility in India.  Dr. Modi went on to establish Graphics India in 1981 in collaboration with Xerox.  He has also forged Joint Venture Partnerships with global giants such as Alcatel, Telstra, Olivetti and Telekom Malaysia. Dr. Modi established Spice Global under the name Modi Corp. Later, the company came to be known as MCorp Global and Spice Corp, before it finally became Spice Global. Dr. Modi, who became a Singaporean citizen in 2012, has also been heavily involved in international philanthropy and peace-making.  He was appointed by the UN as Coordinator for the Indian sub-continent for the Millennium World Peace Summit, he has been awarded the British-Japan Friendship Award for World Peace, and he has received the  Award for exemplary community service from Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.  He has also received the  Outstanding Telecom & Informatics Entrepreneurship Award.  Dr. Modi received a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology – Banaras Hindu University (IIT – BHU) and the MBA from the University of Southern California. He has been awarded a PhD in financial management and conferred a DLitt in industrial management.
