The Challenge of Mechanical and Systems Research in Intelligent
Manufacturing and Mobility

Dr.JS HU (ITRI)

The manufacturing sector is an ever-changing field with continuous challenges in environmental regulation, aging population, resources shortage and globalization. Most of all, the transparent and fast spreading information nowadays has product development and innovation moving at a lightning pace. New ideas on manufacturing technology not only focus on improving the efficiency and lowering the cost, but also try to ensure the shortest time-to-market for new products. Another field that will undergo major changes is the transportation industry including personal vehicles. The concepts of advanced mobility including autonomous vehicles are actively pursued, not to mention the progress of vehicle electrification based on various renewable energy sources.

Mechanical and Systems Research Laboratories (MSL) of ITRI, perceiving clearly these trends and the associated R&D needs, has set forward its vision as being a center of excellence on intelligent manufacturing and mobility. Specifically, they focus on a tightly coupled mechatronic design approach that enhances the hardware value through analytic tools and software. Their approach also follows the route of environmental friendliness (e.g., green energy) and attempts to seek opportunities in miniaturization. An R&D infrastructure to cultivate technology building blocks is developed to enable a fast integration with others. This talk will give a more elaborate introduction of various R&D activities in MSL to support this vision as well as collaboration cases with industry for specific applications.

Dr. Jwu-Sheng, Hu is the General Director, Mechanical and Systems Research Laboratories (MSL), ITRI and a professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), National Chiao Tung Univ.

Dr. Hu received the B.S. degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, in 1984, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of California at Berkeley, in 1988 and 1990, respectively.

From 1991-1993, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI where he received the Research Initiation Award from National Science Foundation. Since 1993, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan and became a full professor in 1998. He served as the vice-chairman of the Department since 2006. From 2008; he works in-part at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan where he serves as the advisor for the Intelligent Robotics program and principle investigator of several join research projects on robotics across academia, industry and research institutions. He also serves as a research faculty at the National Chip Implementation Center (CIC) of Taiwan for embedded system design applications from 2006 to 2009. He was the chairman of the Taipei Chapter, IEEE RA Society form 2011-2013. From 2013, he served as the Chief Technology Officer of the Mechanical and System Lab. (MSL), ITRI as well as the Director of the Intelligent Robotics Division. In 2015, he was promoted to be the General Director of MSL and VP of ITRI.

Dr. Hu’s research interests include robotics, mechatronics, and embedded systems where he published over 250 technical articles and 70 patents. He established both DSP and Embedded System programming lab in NCTU in 1990’s and his students won many technology competition awards. Since he joined ITRI, he led the robotics group to establish the nation’s largest Robotics research lab with many collaboration and technology transfer to the local industry. Currently, he is leading the MSL to create technologies in the broad area of manufacturing and vehicles, including the standardization of various emerging industrial technologies. Dr. Hu has been an active member of IEEE and ASME. He also serves as the council member of Chinese Automatic Control Society, Chinese Institute of Automation Engineers, and Taiwan Society of Robotics.
