Getting Value for Japanese Companies through Open Innovation:
Challenges and Solutions for Silicon Valley Expats

Monday, December 12, 2016
9:00 am – 5:30 pm

The pressure on large Japanese companies to become more productive and creative through open innovation has increased dramatically in recent years. Companies are aiming to achieve that goal through various channels, including:

  • Alliances, partnerships, investments and M&A of (foreign) startups
  • Increased collaboration with universities and other company-external research institutions
  • The establishment of (overseas) innovation centers and accelerators, often within or in conjunction with their R&D centers
  • The study of best practices and experimentation with new methodologies for innovation

While the Silicon Valley outposts of Japanese companies are often the focal point of such new interactions, their representatives typically face great challenges in delivering Silicon Valley innovations to their parent firms. Some typical problems are the speed of decision-making and the difficulty of getting the parent firm to understand the strategic importance of emerging market and industry changes that are obvious to their watchers in the Valley.

This workshop will explore such challenges in greater detail, and it will discuss some successful cases in which the challenges have been overcome. The ultimate goals are (a) to create a platform for these representatives to connect to Valley resources in solving such problems in the future, and (b) to build a community that will help them deliver the merits of open innovation to their firms back home in Japan.
