Disruptive Ideas, Open Innovation & New Value Chains: Trends in Asia

Professor Richard Dasher

Director of the US-Asia Technology Management Center | Executive Director of the Center for Integrated Systems
Consulting Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University

It has long been recognized that start-up companies with disruptive ideas can create new industries; consider for example the roles of Facebook and Twitter in the growth of multiple industries related to social networking and big data.   This presentation first presents a conceptual framework to describe the impact of such disruptive ideas on the structure and dynamics of existing industries.  In this framework, open innovation plays a key part in sustaining corporate growth during a time of rapid technology change.  Established firms use inbound open innovation, namely the integration of ideas and knowledge from external sources along with company-internal development efforts, in order to incorporate potentially disruptive new products or services in their innovation pipelines.  Such disruptive new ideas may lead to major changes in the value chains associated with an existing industry; for example, the emergence of electric vehicles causes changes in the supply chain of the automobile industry and in the businesses of related industries, e.g. filling stations.  While Silicon Valley has led the way in the evolution of many new value chains, this presentation will discuss current trends and the dynamics of emerging open innovation patterns in key Asia markets.   This will serve as an overview to introduce topics that will be addressed by guest speakers in this nine-week series of seminars and panel discussions on “New Value Chains and the Rise of Open Innovation in Asia.”

Immediately following the session, we’ll have a short-networking reception from 5:30 – 6:15PM.  This is the first session in the US-Asia Technology Management Center’s nine week seminar series on “Topics in International Technology Management.”

Presented by the US-Asia Technology Management Center in Stanford’s School of Engineering, with general series support from SunBridge Partners and the Miner Foundation.
