The future of Okinawa – Sustainable growth and managing the U.S. military presence

The Okinawa Prefectural Government truly appreciates the United States’ contributions to maintaining the peace and stability in Japan and East Asia. Even now, over 70% of the military facilities that are exclusively used by the U.S. forces in Japan are concentrated in Okinawa, which accounts for only 0.6 % of the entire land area of Japan. This has led to many difficulties more than 70 years after World War II, including military aircraft noise/accidents, crimes, and environmental pollution by toxic substances. He would like to discuss his future visions and ideas on how these could be alleviated. 
 
About the speaker:

The Honorable Denny Tamaki, Governor of Okinawa

Mr. Denny Tamaki won the October 2018 election with 55% of the vote, and became the 8th Governor of Okinawa in October 2018. Previously Mr. Tamaki served as an Okinawa City Council Member from 2002 to 2005, and in 2009 he was elected to the House of Representatives of the National Diet of Japan and has been serving his constituents in Okinawa for four terms. Mr. Tamaki was born in Uruma, Okinawa to an Okinawan mother and a U.S. Marine father.
