US-ATMC Director Dr. Richard Dasher visits Tohoku University for briefings, discussions on startup ecosystem

This past September US-ATMC Director Dr. Richard Dasher visited Tohoku University in an advisory capacity about their contributions to deep tech innovation and the growth of a startup ecosystem in the Northeast Japan (Tohoku) region.

Prof. Dasher (3rd person from left) seen here at the Tohoku University Aobayama campus visiting the Nanoterasu synchrotron, which is currently under construction.  Prof. Masaki Takata (2nd person on left) heads the synchrotron project.  Dr. Takata serves both as Executive Advisor to the Tohoku University president and also as President of the nonprofit Photon Science Innovation Center. The Nanoterasu synchrotron is highly unusual in that it is a public private partnership, with fundscoming from a number of member companies as well as the Japanese national government and regional governments. Companies will be able to conduct experiments into advanced atomic scale imaging of soft materials as well as metals etc.  Test runs at Nanoterasu are scheduled for late 2023 with company use possible some time in 2024.

Prof. Dasher and Prof. Tetsuo Endoh at Tohoku University’s Center for Innovative Integrated Electronics Systems (CIES) looking at a 300 mm wafer that was produced in the  laboratory.  The wafer contains computer chips that integrate regular design elements with blocks of transistors that use spintronics.  Spintronics devices store information via the direction of the spin of electrons rather than by whether or not they are conducting electricity.
