POP Movement: Spearheading Youth-Led Innovation and Action to Protect Our Planet

The session provides an overview of the work, vision, and values of the POP (Protect Our Planet) Movement and will showcase its approach to spearheading youth-led action to tackle climate change through projects with unique, innovative, and technology-based solutions. POP projects are conceived and led by youth leaders, who develop them nurtured under a mentorship program that provides them with practical training, connections, and support in developing and scaling-up their individual and collective impact.  POP projects range from micro-irrigation (Haiti) and marine life awareness (Australia) to abiotic alkaline battery cells from agricultural residues (Mexico), bio-enzymes for eco-friendly disinfectants (Australia), and reduce-recycle-reuse protocols to reduce plastic pollution (Uganda), to name just a few.

In this session, POP founder Dr. Ash Pachauri will introduce some recent POP projects and discuss their impact, both on the youth leaders and on the communities they serve.

  • Dr. Norma Patricia Munoz: Mexico & India – Sargassum Research: Environmental and health impact associated with the presence of Sargassum on the Caribbean coast

  • Xiaotong Du: China – China’s Glacier Protection

  • Kevin Morales Münstermann & Ivan Ransom Rodriguez: Mexico – Resilience 2020

  • Samuel C. Okorie: Nigeria – POP Nigeria

The series begins September 29, 2022 and continues weekly until December 1, 2022. Seminars will be held Thursdays, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM.

Speakers

Dr. Ash Pachauri

Co-Founder & Senior Mentor, POP Movement

Dr. Ash Pachauri has a PhD in decision behavior and master’s degree in international management. Having worked with McKinsey & Company before pursuing a career in the social development arena, Dr. Pachauri’s experience in the field of public health emerges from a range of initiatives including those of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, PATH, the UN, and CDC program interventions in the US. He is also a technical adviser to the World Health Organization on Self-Care global guidelines.

Dr. Pachauri has been engaged with the use of information technology for health, education, and geo-informatics. A master trainer in behavior change communications and strategic health leadership, Dr. Pachauri has led over 20,000 workshops, events, and activities globally to outreach to youth and communities to promote health and sustainable development.

Widely published, winner of the prestigious Overseas Research Scholarship, awarded for advanced studies in the U.K. and recognized for his academic achievements, Dr. Pachauri pursues interests in research and teaching through ongoing collaboration with universities and institutions. Dr. Pachauri has been recognized by the United Nations for his dedication and leadership in their flagship publication “Portraits of Commitment”. In 2021, he was awarded the GlobalMindED Inclusive Leadership Award for action in the field of Energy and Sustainability. He is an Associate Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science. Dr. Pachauri serves on the Boards and Advisory groups of several organizations worldwide.

Xiaotong Du

Program Manager, Polar Hub

Xiaotong Du is an ecology professional focused on environmental research, biodiversity conservation and innovative solutions. Experienced project manager with a demonstrated history of working in intercultural/international non-profit organizations. She now oversees Polar Hub’s glaciers citizen science program. Before joining Polar Hub, she worked at Wildlife Conservation Society, managing on-field species programs. She holds a Master of Public Affairs (M.P.A.) degree with a track in Nonprofit Administration from Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY)

Kevin Morales Münstermann

POP Youth Mentor, Finance and Enterprise

Kevin Morales Münstermann is a Biologist who has dedicated his life to making social and environmental impact in Mexico. He started his career as a delegate representing Somalia in the UN Simulation in 2007; monitor of the Ministry of Foreign Relations in the 62nd DPI/NGO Conference of United Nations; and as AIESEC volunteer from 2010 to 2013 where he became vice-president of outgoing exchange in AIESEC ITAM national support team in Mexico and facilitator in multiple conferences. He did his exchange with AIESEC Lagos, Nigeria, where he worked in Brothers Keepers Initiative. Currently, he works at Asado del Valle (family restaurant). He’s Co-Founder of BVB09MEX Fanclub, the official Borussia Dortmund fan club in Mexico; Co-Founder of Academia Borussia, a sports academy, supported by the German football team Borussia Dortmund, that promotes values to make environmental and social impact using football as a tool; Co-Founder of Fussballplatz, a sustainable football field in Mexico City; and Co-Founder of Resilience 2020. Recently, he became an AIESEC Alumni member and Honorary Youth Mentor of the POP Movement.

Samuel C. Okorie

POP Youth Mentor and Ambassador for Africa

Samuel is a Climate Reality Leader with expertise in loss and damage, climate change negotiation, community and Youth Engagement and policy analysis. He is the founder/pioneer of the POP Nigeria Initiative on Climate Education (https://thepopmovement.org/pop-nigeria-initiative/). In the African continent, as the Youth mentor/African Ambassador for The POP Movement (https://thepopmovement.org/team/samuel-c-okorie/), Samuel has supported different grassroots youth-led groups in Africa with mentorship programs, capacity-building workshops and seed grants to lead and implement climate change resilience projects in their local communities. He is a European Climate Pact Ambassador for the EU, the Communications and Policy Advisor for GLOBE (Global Legislators Organization for a Balanced Environment) Nigeria and the Contact Point for Loss and Damage YOUNGO-UNFCCC. Samuel is also known as a Climate Crusader, and with the support from different youth groups, he was able to lead bilateral dialogues and demonstrations for loss and damage finance as well as loss and damage negotiations with the EU, Germany, and Switzerland at COP27 and Co-Moderated the bilateral discussion between YOUNGO and the COP27 President which was productive. He also spoke at different side events in COP27 on Loss and Damage, Wetland conservation, Environmental Governance, Policy mapping and Youth Inclusion, among others. At COP27, Samuel was featured on different global media platforms including the official media pages of COP27, UNICEF, ONE Campaign etc. Part of the result of his engagement at COP27 which happens to be his first COP was the adoption of loss and damage finance item, which was his major demand for Climate Justice.

Ivan Ransom Rodríguez

POP Sustainability Ambassador and Mentor

Ivan Ransom Rodríguez has a BSc in Biology from UNAM, specialized in Sustainable Development through 10 courses and diplomates, and completed post-graduation at the University of St Andrews. As a climate advocate, Ivan has been raising awareness about environmental issues and solutions for over 5 years, and as an independent consultant, Ivan has won public and private sector competitions. Moreover, he is the co-author of two research papers and did cancer research at the University of Aberdeen. Ivan is also the Co-Founder of Resilience 2020 and the Communication Manager of the Swiss Impact Investment Association.

Dr. Norma Patricia Muñoz Sevilla

POP Honorary Distinguished Mentor

A renowned biologist, with a PhD in biological oceanography and marine biochemistry specialty, Dr. Norma Patricia Muñoz Sevilla is the former head of the Climate Change Council for the Presidency of the Mexican Republic. Currently a researcher of the Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Studies on Environment and Development at the National Polytechnic Institute, Mexico she is affiliated with several prestigious environmental organizations. She is a member of the group of ocean experts in UNESCO-IOC, and also of the National Network for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate Change among several other global councils. With around 89 scientific articles and 15 books on coastal zones, environmental deterioration and climate change to her credit, Dr Muñoz also co-authored the National Seas and Coastal Policy of Mexico. She has approximately 41 awards for her professional performance, including the “Order of the Academic Palms”, awarded by the Government of the French Republic in 2011.
